Den Bowling Club (Teignmouth) - Our Club Badge

We have found some information about our distinctive club "badge"- argent, a saltire engrailed between four fleur de lis gules. (silver, with a times cross set between four irises in gold.

The arms of the Portreeve of Teignmouth. (Portreeve, the official in charge of the market. Port meaning market rather than sea port).

Edward the Elder (870-924), son of Alfred the Great, wanted to ensure that taxes were paid so only allowed trading to take place in markets sanctioned by him. He appointed Portreeves to oversee them.

The original badge had 4 leopards heads and no one knows when or why they changed to fleur de lis (irises).
